SNP “going backwards” on dangerous cladding

Scottish Liberal Democrat housing spokesperson Morven-May MacCallum MSP has said she is concerned the SNP is “going backwards” on removing dangerous cladding, as the one building the Scottish Government had apparently finished remedial work for now requires further work.

The Scottish Government can provide funding for checks known as Single Building Assessments (SBAs) for buildings which may have dangerous cladding.

These checks evaluate the risk to human life posed by the cladding they find. They can result in work being carried out to remove the cladding.

New figures reveal that:

• Further remediation work has now been recommended for the one building that the Scottish Government apparently completed in 2024, suggesting that the government have not finished removing cladding from any buildings.
• As of 30th June 2026, remediation work was underway in just two more buildings.
• As at 30th June 2026, sixteen Scottish Government funded SBAs had been completed, but this has not changed since September 2025.

Morven-May MacCallum MSP said:

“These shocking figures suggest the SNP government is going backwards on removing dangerous cladding.

“The fact that not a single government-funded check has been completed in the last year also illustrates the fundamental lack of urgency in the SNP’s approach.

“Nearly a decade on from Grenfell, too many people are lying awake at night, wondering if their home might be at risk.

“The Scottish Government needs to ramp up progress before it’s too late.”
