Scottish Liberal Democrat deputy leader Wendy Chamberlain has today used a visit to a bar in Edinburgh to set out her party’s key priorities for boosting Scottish exports.

The chair of the Scottish Liberal Democrats’ election campaign set out how the party will:

  • Make it official Scottish Government policy to support a new bespoke customs union between the UK and EU – the single biggest change that could be made to fix trade, boost growth and improve government finances.
  • Put Scotland at the heart of the development and export of clean technologies.
  • Remove logistical challenges to the movement of supplies and products by ending the ferries fiasco for good and improving roads.
  • Champion Scotland’s world-class produce abroad and work with the UK Government to remove unnecessary barriers and tariffs on key Scottish exports like whisky.

Wendy was using a Scottish non-alcoholic product to make mocktails at Rabble - a hotel, restaurant and bar.

Wendy Chamberlain said:

“From our world class distilleries to engineering excellence, Scotland has so much going for it. But right now, it feels like our country simply isn’t working.

“Under the SNP, growth has stalled and productivity is weak. Meanwhile, the botched Brexit deal - pushed by Nigel Farage and delivered by the Conservatives – is making us all worse off and Labour don’t have a plan.

“Scottish Liberal Democrats believe that fair economic growth is the only way out of our fiscal mess and the cost of living crisis. We will back business to innovate, scale and trade. We believe in building new economic alliances in an insecure world.

“We will make it official Scottish Government policy to support a new bespoke customs union between the UK and EU – the single biggest change that could be made to fix trade, boost growth and improve government finances.

“That’s how we deliver change with fairness at its heart. If you believe we need a growing economy and a return to the heart of Europe, no matter where you are, you should back Scottish LIberal Democrats on your peach regional ballot paper.”
