Ex-leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and former Deputy First Minister Lord Nicol Stephen, a fellow Aberdonian, said:

“Sir Ian gave me my first student job when I was 18 years old at Aberdeen Harbour. I then worked closely with him on the board of Grampian Enterprise and when he was chair of Scottish Enterprise.

“More recently, when I was Chief Executive of Flotation Energy, Sir Ian did a huge amount to support the offshore renewables sector and the energy transition. Our paths crossed in so many ways over almost 50 years.

“He was an inspirational figure - always thoughtful, sincere and very supportive. He was not only one of the very greatest Aberdonians but also a hugely respected global figure. He will be missed enormously and my thoughts go out to Lady Helen, his sons and all of the Wood family.”

MSP for North East Scotland, Yi-pei Chou Turvey said:

“Sir Ian Wood was a giant of the North East economy and an inspiration to so many.

“He always had a firm eye on the future and what would help Scotland succeed.

“His tremendous legacy will live on through the many initiatives that he was central to establishing and supporting in Aberdeen and beyond.

“My thoughts are with his loved ones.”
