Scot Lib Dems call for a cut in whisky duty in response to Trump tariff threat
Scottish Liberal Democrat economy spokesperson Jamie Greene has today used a question session in the Scottish Parliament to call for a cut in whisky duty to help the industry weather dramatic tariffs that Donald Trump is threatening to impose on British exports.
Addressing Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes, Mr Greene called on the Scottish Government to join him in backing a cut.
Mr Greene said:
“I was always taught to stand up to bullies and the way to beat economic bullying is by making trade easier.
“With the threat of tariffs looming, Scotland, the UK and the EU must unite, in a show of strength, against US protectionism.
“But on a practical level, can I ask the Scottish Government if they will join the Scottish Liberal Democrats in calling on the UK Government to implement an immediate cut to whisky duty of 5% to show our whisky industry that we are 100% behind it, and to show President Trump, that free trade will always trump isolationism?”
