Publicans back Scot Lib Dem plans for World Cup licensing changes
Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton has urged the Scottish Government to seize the moment as publicans including the chair of the Glasgow licensing forum, the boss of Edinburgh brewer Innis & Gunn and the Scottish Licensed Trade Association backed his party’s plans for pubs to get special dispensation to show their matches in the event that they are scheduled for late at night.
The party is also calling for stadiums and parks to host huge screens to beam back the games from the USA, Mexico and Canada.
It has also called for pubs to be given special late-night licenses to air Scotland’s games if it turns out that the time difference means they happen overnight.
Alex Cole-Hamilton said:
“After a tough few years for pubs and clubs, what an opportunity this is for the government to work with them to make the most of this amazing achievement.
“If Scotland are kicking off at 2am, some will watch it at home in their jammies. But I think there are lots of people who would like to watch this with their friends in a pub or community venue.
“I’m delighted to see the industry is getting behind our plans. Now it is up to the Scottish Government to seize the moment. A well-planned, temporary relaxation is the common-sense approach that balances enjoyment with public safety.
“Remember: No Scotland, No Party.”
