New data shows effort to eradicate Grenfell-style cladding from Scotland dangerously behind schedule
New figures released today by the Scottish Government have revealed that the programme to remove deadly Grenfell-style cladding from Scottish buildings is moving dangerously slowly.New figures released today by the Scottish Government have revealed that the programme to remove deadly Grenfell-style cladding from Scottish buildings is moving dangerously slowly.
The data shows that as of the end of February:
- Only 16 Single Building Assessments (SBAs) had been completed
- That number remained unchanged despite nearly 1,000 SBA applications being deemed likely eligible for Scottish Government funding
- The vast majority of SBAs still underway were in Glasgow even though applications have come from across Scotland
Responding to the new data, Scottish Liberal Democrat housing spokesperson and lead candidate for Central Scotland and Lothians West Paul McGarry said:
“Nearly nine years after the entirely avoidable Grenfell tragedy claimed dozens of lives, too many Scots are living with the threat of a similar disaster – all because yet another of the SNP government’s initiatives isn’t moving fast enough to tackle the problem.
“The Scottish Liberal Democrats will set a clear timescale and commit to milestones for the removal of dangerous cladding from all Scottish buildings, kickstarting this unacceptably sluggish programme that has left thousands of people still living in potentially deadly homes.
“Scotland deserves a parliament and a government that actually gets things done. That’s what the Scottish Liberal Democrats believe in, and that’s what you can vote for on your peach regional ballot on May 7th.”
