Nationalists in shambles as GERS figures make case for UK ties

Liberal Democrat Scottish Affairs spokesperson Susan Murray MP has today said that today’s GERS statistics published by the Scottish Government leave the nationalists in a shambles as they revealed that expenditure per person was £2,669 higher in Scotland than the rest of the UK and the Scottish Government’s net fiscal balance – effectively Scotland’s deficit - is now £26.5 billion, equivalent to 11.7% of GDP, more than twice that of the UK.
Commenting on the figure, Susan Murray MP said:
“The Scottish Government’s own statistics have once again left the nationalists in a shambles.
“This is the bottom line that Nicola Sturgeon and co cannot get away from: Scotland gets a good deal out of being part of the UK.
“Even before you factor in centuries of cultural ties, mutual aid, shared defence and common values, Scotland gets to spend more money than it would do if it went it alone.
“Let’s put arguing over the constitution to bed and get to grips with fixing the NHS, restoring Scottish education to its rightful place and fixing Scotland’s creaking infrastructure.”
