Murray condemns state-endorsed robbery response to asylum crisis
Commenting on the UK Government’s announcement that asylum seekers could have their jewellery or other valuables taken to pay for their housing costs, Liberal Democrat Scottish Affairs spokesperson Susan Murray MP said:
“Taxpayers are shelling out £6 million every day in hotel bills, but confiscating family heirlooms from vulnerable people is not going to bring down those costs.
“This state-endorsed robbery flies in the face of our long history of showing compassion to those fleeing suffering and persecution.
“Liberal Democrats would end the use of asylum hotels and give asylum seekers the right to work so that they can support themselves financially, integrate into our communities and pay tax. That is the most effective way of bringing down the asylum bill.”
