Murray calls for protection of Scotch whisky in Korea trade deal
Liberal Democrat Scottish Affairs Spokesperson Susan Murray MP has today called on the government to protect Scottish whisky in the ongoing Free Trade Agreement negotiations between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea.
The UK and South Korea are currently negotiating a new trade deal to replace the 2019 continuity agreement, an agreement which mirrored the free trade deal negotiated under the EU. The proposed agreement focuses on services, digital trade and sustainability, but raises concerns that key Scottish exports such as whisky could lose tariff protections when the current “rules of origin” provisions expire in 2026.
Ms Murray has urged the government to ensure that Scotch whisky is properly safeguarded in the new deal, highlighting that the industry is worth over £5.6 billion annually and supports 42,000 jobs across Scotland.
Commenting on her calls, Susan Murray MP stated:
“Scotch whisky is a cornerstone of our economy and a source of pride across Scotland. It deserves a trade deal that recognises its value and protects its global reputation.
“The expiry of current trading arrangements could see producers face new tariffs and barriers, another blow for distillers who already face a heavy tax burden.
“I will continue to stand up for industries central to our Scottish economy. The Liberal Democrats are focused on supporting communities at a local level and the industries that sustain them. I will continue to press the government to uphold fair trading conditions for Scotland’s whisky sector.”
