Responding to a report published by the Prison Officers’ Association (POA), which warns that overcrowding and understaffing have pushed Scotland’s jails to ‘crisis point’, and states that staff morale is at an all-time low, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

“This horrific report exposes the boiling point pressures that my party have warned about for years.

“The SNP have let overcrowding spiral out of control, leaving staff exhausted and overwhelmed with next to no time to work with prisoners and help with rehabilitation.

“Only the Scottish Liberal Democrats have a plan to tackle overcrowding and cut reoffending by driving down the use of remand, investing in robust community-based measures and clearing court backlogs. That’s how we can support staff and get our justice system back on track.”
