Responding to new recorded crime figures which show that total recorded crime is up 5%, while shoplifting is up 37%, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur said:

“Any uptick in crime levels needs to be carefully monitored and solutions put in place.

“The police need to be equipped to adapt to changing circumstances. However the wider rollout of piloted schemes that have seen many cases not even getting a visit or an investigation seems like a step in the wrong direction.

“The SNP seem to have abandoned their pledge to maintain officer numbers and abandoned their pretence that this is anything other than a money saving measure.

“I hope that in years to come this decision will not be reflected in further rises in offence numbers and a further loss of local policing in our communities.”
