Local MP responds to Cameron Barracks delay
Responding to the UK Government delaying the use of Cameron Barracks in Inverness to house asylum seekers, Angus MacDonald, MP for Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire said:
“Irrespective of how long this delay lasts, Cameron Barracks is not an appropriate location to house such a large number of asylum seekers. It is the wrong solution in the wrong place.
"I have asked the Home Office to host a public meeting to answer the questions of the community.
“While the Labour Government inherited a broken system, the answer isn’t moving asylum seekers from one kind of unsuitable and costly accommodation to another.
“Instead, it must focus on tackling the real issue – speeding up asylum decisions so people with no right to be here are returned swiftly, and those with valid claims can get on with working, integrating, and contributing to our communities.”
