Commenting as he came from fourth place to defeat the SNP with a 2,572 majority and be elected as the new MSP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden, Scottish Liberal Democrat Adam Harley said:

“To everyone who voted for me yesterday: thank you.

“Thank you also to my fellow candidates for a well-contested election and to my amazing campaign team for all their work over the last few months.

“The trust that people have now placed in me is both a privilege and a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously.

“Whether you voted for me or not, I promise I will work hard every day on your behalf, and I will make sure your voice is heard loudly and clearly in our parliament.

“Today is going to be a good day for the Liberal Democrats. People have once again placed their trust in us and, in doing so, they have voted for a grown-up politics that seeks genuine solutions to the problems we face.

“It is in that spirit that I will serve every constituent in Strathkelvin and Bearsden. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do so.”

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton said:

“I am absolutely over the moon for Adam.

“This is a stellar result. We have never held this seat in the Scottish Parliament before, and we have never placed better than third.

“But after knocking on the doors of tens of thousands of constituents, Adam has built the trust of local people, who can depend on us to deliver change with fairness at its heart.

“This result puts us in a pole position to remove the SNP on East Dunbartonshire council and give everyone here the excellent Liberal Democrat representation they deserve.”
