Lib Dems getting stuff done from John O’Groats to Land’s End with another by-election win
Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has said that his party are “getting stuff done from John O’Groats to Land’s End” as they swept to victory in the Wick council by-election, more than tripling the nationalists’ vote share in a ward represented by the SNP Highland Council leader.
The victory sees Julie Calder elected as the new Liberal Democrat Highland councillor for the Wick and East Caithness ward.
It is the same ward represented by the SNP leader of Highland Council.
On first preferences, Scottish Liberal Democrats won 50% of the vote, more than tripling the SNP’s vote share. This was the best ever performance by the Scottish Liberal Democrats in this ward.
Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:
“From Land’s End to John O’Groats, Liberal Democrats are getting stuff done on the issues that matter.
“I am absolutely thrilled for Julie. She is going to give everyone in Wick and East Caithness the tireless and diligent representation they deserve.
“This was a spectacular victory in the backyard of the SNP leader of Highland council.
“It just goes to show how much people in the Highlands trust the Scottish Liberal Democrats to get results for them.”
Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross David Green MSP said:
"I am delighted that my friend Julie Calder has been elected to serve Wick and East Caithness. She is a hard-working local champion with a track record of helping people in the area.
"She is Caithness through and through and her community-first attitude to service is exactly what we need.
"The message this election sends is clear - the Liberal Democrats are the voice of the Highlands.
"It is now up to us to repay that trust by working day in and day out to ensure our communities are heard."
Newly elected Highland councillor for Wick and East Caithness Julie Calder said:
“I would like to thank everyone who played a part in this fantastic result today.
“I want to bring people together so that we can find solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing the area, from transforming access to maternity services to action on our roads and fixing the crisis in social care.
“My message to everyone in Wick and East Caithness is this: I will work day-in, day-out to put communities first. I will never stop pushing for the investment and services that our area deserves."
