Commenting on Anas Sarwar’s decision to quit as Scottish Labour leader and his appointment to the House of Lords, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton said:

“Whilst Anas Sarwar and I come from different political traditions, I have always regarded him as a friend and I have tremendous respect for his contribution to Scottish public life, not least his dogged pursuit of justice for the families of those who tragically lost their lives at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

“Being a party leader can be hard. It takes its toll on individuals and on family life, but I am glad that he is still going to be playing a role in the life of our country.

“Andy Burnham has a very short window to turn this government around, end the chaos and build trust with communities the whole length and breadth of the UK.

“What people want is a government that finally delivers the change people are crying out for – whether that’s fixing social care to rescue the NHS or a new deal with Europe to boost our defence and end the cost-of-living crisis.”
