Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate for Shetland Beatrice Wishart has today set her sights on tackling what she describes as "discriminatory" delivery charges imposed on people across Shetland.
The Scottish Parliament's Information Centre has estimated that the additional cost to Scotland of parcel delivery surcharges increased to £38 million in 2018.
Commenting, Beatrice Wishart said:
“Living here in Shetland, I know just how frustrating it is when companies have total freedom to impose discriminatory pricing policies for online purchases. The costs are eye-watering.
“Buying local is good but we can’t get everything locally. It’s a fact of business life on the islands that we have to engage with suppliers down south.
"It doesn't need to be this way. There has been a collective failure for years, and the increasing volume of parcels means that the numbers affected by this problem will only go up.
"People in Shetland deserve better. Instead of scoring political points, it is time Scottish and UK ministers worked together to end this unfair practice and give people in Shetland a fair deal."
