Scottish Liberal Democrat energy spokesman Liam McArthur MSP today said new figures which reveal the UK wind industry supports 30,000 jobs show that Tory policies pose a clear and present danger to the renewables sector.
Almost 75% of Renewable UK members polled for a new report thought the investment climate in the UK is less favourable now than it has been over the last 18 months. 90% of companies said Government policy was less favourable to renewables, compared to less than a quarter in 2011.
The report from Renewables UK showed that the UK saw £1.25 billion invested in wind power last year. 60% of onshore wind projects are installed in Scotland, generating £211 million. This is a higher turnover than England, Wales and Northern Ireland combined.
Commenting, Liam McArthur MSP said:
“This report highlights the clear and present danger that Tory policies pose to a sector which supports jobs right across the country. Scotland has the potential to become a world leader in renewables.
“Lib Dems in government helped ensure that renewable energy was a priority. We cannot allow misguided Tory Ministers to cut the sector off at the knees. Scotland has missed our carbon emissions reduction targets for the last four years. If we are to improve this dismal record then boosting support for this crucial sector is vital."
