Scottish Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, Jamie Stone has today called on the Scottish Government to tackle their "tragic failure of care" after a new investigation highlighted the plight of pregnant women in the Highlands forced to travel hundreds of miles for medical care.
The investigation by BuzzFeed News highlighted the example of one woman who had a miscarriage on her own at home after she was told the only specialist doctor who could see her was at a hospital 110 miles away. The issue was central to Jamie Stone's campaign at the recent general election.
Mr Stone said:
"It is absolutely essential that mothers-to-be receive the best possible care as they look forward to expanding their family.
"The National Health Service should be just that - a service available for everyone, nationally, and in every corner of the country. It is a tragic failure of care that the SNP have allowed maternity services to be eroded at enormous risk to patients.
"The Scottish Government needs to admit this situation is untenable and invest in local services to bring these dangerous journeys to an end."
