SNP miss A&E targets for best part of a year

Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has criticised the Scottish Government for failing to meet its A&E performance targets for the best part of a year.

Official figures released today show performance against the 4-hour waiting time target sits at 92%. The Scottish Government’s target is 95%. This has not been achieved since July 2017.

The weekly figures published by ISD Scotland show 142 patients waited over 8 hours and 26 patients waited over 12 hours.

Mr Cole-Hamilton said:

“Patients and health professionals alike will be frustrated to see it is fast approaching a year since A&E performance targets were met.

“The new Health Secretary has a mountain of challenges ahead of her but ensuring the health service is sufficiently resourced to meet the government’s own standards ought to be pretty high up the list.

“Delayed discharge means more people are taking up hospital beds and that’s stopping others leaving A&E. NHS staff are fed up with government inaction. The NHS needs urgent action and some fresh ideas.”
