Responding to Humza Yousaf’s interview in the Sun where he says SPFL bosses shouldn’t have sought secrecy clauses when it reached the agreement to share sectarianism reports with the SNP Government, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
“The Scottish Government colluded in keeping the report on sectarianism at football matches secret. Now that they’ve been caught out they’re back peddling as fast as they possibly can.
“The Cabinet Secretary isn’t fooling anybody with his attempt to pin all the blame on the football authorities. The SNP knew it was wrong to keep this data secret and stifle public debate but then signed up to a gagging contract with the SPFL anyway.
“If the Scottish Liberal Democrat investigation in conjunction with anti-sectarianism charity Nil by Mouth hadn’t shone a light on this nothing would have changed and the SNP would have continued to keep this information hush hush.
“The SNP have to hold their hands up, apologise to fans and ensure this data is immediately released so we can make serious progress on countering sectarian behaviour at football with the benefit of all the information.”
