Scottish Liberal Democrat economy spokesperson, Cllr Carolyn Caddick, has today said that significant investment in education and skills is the key to reducing unemployment and growing the economy as new figures show Scotland has continued to slip behind the rest of the UK on both unemployment and employment.
GDP figures, also released today, show the Scottish economy grew by only 0.2% in the third quarter of 2016, compared to 0.6% growth in the UK economy.
Commenting Ms Caddick said:
“Both unemployment and employment figures have continued to worsen and we are seeing Scotland fall further behind the rest of the UK on GDP growth.
“The only sustainable long term route out of this is significant investment in education and skills which is something the Scottish Liberal Democrats will continue to champion. This is the way to establish the high wage high skill economy that we strive towards.”
