Scottish Liberal Democrat Europe spokesman Tavish Scott MSP today said it is clear where the First Ministers priorities lie as it emerged that four times as many civil servants are working on plans for a second referendum than have been attached to the new Brexit Minister.
Media reports today revealed that eight civil servants are working on legislation for a second independence referendum. Freedom of Information requests from the Liberal Democrats have shown that just two civil servants are working directly for the Minister for UK Negotiations on Scotland's Place in Europe.
Commenting Mr Scott said:
“It is now crystal clear where the First Minister’s priorities lie. Four times as many staff are drawing up legislation for a second independence referendum than have been attached to the Scottish Government’s Brexit Minister.
“Senior SNP figures are amongst those to have urged Nicola Sturgeon to put independence to one side and get on with the day job. She needs to listen to them. We need a Scottish Government that is focused on protecting the benefits that we enjoy as part of the EU, not chasing a second independence poll.
“Everyone knows the First Minister wants independence. But we need all of those who agree we are stronger and better off when we work with our friends and neighbours in Europe to be out there making the positive case for the EU. The last thing Scotland needs are more divisive constitutional rows.”
