Scott criticises Swinney’s dismissal of teacher testing concerns

Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Tavish Scott MSP has hammered SNP arrogance on P1 testing, after the Education Secretary, John Swinney, branded the conclusive Holyrood vote to end P1 testing “a disgrace” at a fringe meeting at the SNP conference and again failed to indicate that he would listen to the will of Parliament.

Tavish Scott said:

“Parliament listened to teachers, pupils, and educational experts. Parliament also listened to the Government’s own international experts.

“The message was simple. Do not test five year old girls and boys. It will not tell teachers anything they do not already know.

“Yet even when the Education Secretary attends a teachers union meeting at his own conference, he still chooses not to hear what they are saying. No wonder teacher morale is falling and the call for strike action grows louder every day.”
