Speaking after he attended the First Minister’s summit on abortion rights alongside campaign groups including Back Off Scotland, BPAS and Rape Crisis Scotland, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton has today said that government support for proposals for buffer zones around Scottish abortion clinics, “must be the base camp, not the summit of our ambition when it comes to protecting and expanding women’s reproductive rights.”
Mr Cole-Hamilton said:
"For almost four years I have joined campaign groups in pressing the Scottish Government to stop dragging their feet and ensure that women feel safe while seeking abortion treatment.
“The First Minister has now confirmed that her government will not stand in the way of Gillian Mackay’s member’s bill.
“These proposals should be the base camp, not the summit of our ambition when it comes to protecting and expanding women’s reproductive rights.
“Now Nicola Sturgeon needs to set out her government’s intention for Scotland to follow in the footsteps of the Isle of Man and remove abortion from criminal law, iron out the kinks in the system preventing women accessing support via telemedicine and ensuring that women are able to access abortion in Scotland up to the 24 week limit without facing long journeys to England to receive care.”
