Scottish Liberal Democrats have today called for action over the treatment of unaccompanied child refugees, branding the UK government “shameful” after it was confirmed that none have arrived under the Dubs resettlement scheme in 2017.
The call comes as the Scottish and Welsh governments write to the UK immigration minister raising concerns about the treatment of unaccompanied child refugees.Last week, the Home Office confirmed that only about 200 children entered the UK under the scheme last year and none have arrived in 2017.
Scottish Liberal Democrat children and young people spokesperson and party convenor Sheila Thomson said:
“Under Theresa May, the Conservatives have u-turned on two previous pledges, one to take more refugees from Syria and another to help abandoned child refugees. These children have faced enormous trauma and suffering and now the UK Government has abandoned them once more.
“Scotland has shown enormous generosity in welcoming refugees but they are being sold short by the shameful actions of the Tories.
“Liberal Democrats have set out a plan to take 50,000 refugees over five years from Syria, as well as reopening the Dubs programme for unaccompanied asylum seeking children stranded in Europe, and working with international partners to create safe and legal routes.”
