Scot Lib Dems: APD cuts reward airline lobbyists but hurt the planet

Scottish Liberal Democrats today warned that Scottish Government plans to cut the rate of Air Passenger Duty are “reckless” and accused the Scottish Government of caving to aviation lobbyists at the expense of making progress towards tackling climate change.

The warning comes ahead of MSPs voting on the Air Departure Tax Bill for the final time this afternoon.

Scottish Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson Mariam Mahmood said:

“Throughout this process, Scottish Liberal Democrats have been clear a multi-million pound aviation tax break is the wrong priority. It will deprive our schools and hospitals of funding and the Scottish Government has been utterly unable to explain how dramatically increasing airline emissions would help Scotland meet its climate commitments.

“A government that is set to pump 60,000 tonnes of additional emissions into our atmosphere can no longer claim to be concerned with building a sustainable legacy for future generations.

“Instead of tackling transport emissions, which haven’t changed in a generation, the SNP has teamed up with the Tories in caving to the aviation industry at the expense of the planet. These plans are wrongheaded and reckless and the Scottish Government should change course immediately.”
