Scarcity of community care traps 1,162 patients in hospital

At the August census there were 1,162 patients waiting in hospital because they needed a care home place, social care support to enable them to live in their own home or a needs assessment to be conducted.

Commenting on the figures, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:

“Hospitals are backed up with patients because the resources are not there to allow them to move and receive the next stage of care in the community.

"Being trapped in hospital when you are otherwise fit to leave can be a huge mental blow to patients and increases the chance that they will have to return to hospital in the future.

“We have been warning the Health Secretary of the scarcity of community care packages and the need to ease pressure on our hardworking NHS and social care staff. Nursing vacancies at their highest since records began in 2007.

“This SNP Government promised to eradicate delayed discharges years ago and has utterly failed. They could start to resolve this by publishing the integrated workforce plan that was due last year.”
