Speaking during a Scottish Government statement on cycling in Scotland in the Scottish Parliament today, Scottish Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Mike Rumbles told MSPs that not enough had been done to deliver on promises to give every school pupil access to cycle training in Scotland.
Mike Rumbles said:
“The Scottish Government has a lot of unfulfilled promises when it comes to increasing the number of journeys made by bicycle in Scotland.
“The Scottish Parliament unanimously passed a Liberal Democrat amendment in October 2017 stating that every school pupil should have the opportunity to benefit from cycle training. At the time, the transport minister promised to double the active travel budget and to deliver the scheme to every school in Scotland.
“But the figures are going in completely the wrong direction and at least a third of children have no access to cycle training whatsoever.
“Encouraging people to cycle is good for the environment and good for the health of the country. The Secretary for Transport must redouble his efforts to deliver cycle training and deliver the Scottish Government’s promise, so that not a single pupil misses out.”
