Responding to the UK government’s decision to close Fort George today, Scottish Liberal Democrat North East Scotland MSP, Mike Rumbles described the decision as a major blow for Northern Scotland.
The UK Defence Secretary, Michael Fallon, is expected to confirm this afternoon that Fort George barracks will close in 2032. This decision comes despite widespread opposition to the proposal from other political parties and campaign groups with a petition calling on the UK government to reconsider gathering thousands of signatures.
Commenting Mr Rumbles said:
“The campaign to save Fort George is incredibly important because of the impact the closure of the base will have on the local economy. Millions of pounds will be snatched away and hundreds of jobs will be put at risk.
“It’s a shame that despite the public outcry to maintain the base, the UK government has barrelled ahead with little regard for the local community”
“When Danny Alexander represented Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey, he worked hard to ensure that Fort George was protected during the last round of defence cuts.
“It’s a tragedy that now 270 years of military history will be swept away and we urge the UK government to reconsider this decision.”
