Rumbles calls for groundwork to be laid for fresh rail operator

Commenting on ScotRail boss Alex Hynes’ appearance before the Rural Affairs and Connectivity committee, at which he confirmed that the rail firm did not expect to meet the franchise performance target of 92.5% until the end of 2021, Scottish Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Mike Rumbles MSP said:

“There is no point in a performance target if ScotRail intend to miss it for almost the entire duration of the franchise.

“Passengers want reliable, punctual train travel that does what it says on the posters. It’s time Scotland’s rail franchise was in fresh hands.

“If we want a smooth transition to a new rail operator, the Scottish Government should start laying the ground work now.”

On proposals to consider closing Haymarket or Waverley at busy times, Mr Rumbles said:

“This is a bizarre proposal. ScotRail have been given this franchise to smoothly operate Scotland’s railways, not pull the plug on certain stations when the going gets tough.”
