Responding to Nicola Sturgeon's comments that education will be central to this year’s Programme for Government, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP said:
"Last year education was Nicola Sturgeon's "defining mission". This year it is the "cornerstone" of her programme for government. The SNP love to talk about education but they have repeatedly failed to deliver
"On the SNP's watch there are 500 teacher vacancies, the number of college students has fallen by over 40% and the Education Secretary cannot even decide how to measure the attainment gap, never mind set out clear plans for tackling it.
"Nicola Sturgeon should admit that she has a presided over a decade of educational decline and commit to a transformative investment in Scottish education.
“As part of a £500 million additional investment in education, Scottish Liberal Democrats would return college funding to record levels, deliver a properly funded pupil premium to tackle the attainment gap and enable everyone to get the education and skills they need to get on in life.”
