Responding to comments from Scottish government adviser Dr Roy Robertson suggesting that people caught with small amounts of illegal substances should no longer be prosecuted, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie said:
"It is time for a sensible and enlightened new approach to address the damage that drugs inflict on our communities, families and individuals. We need a policy that prevents unnecessary deaths, alleviates the burden on our NHS and frees up the justice system to tackle the people and organised crime groups producing and dealing drugs.
“These comments today from a senior doctor and a senior police officer show how much support a change in policy is attracting.
“For many years the Liberal Democrats have supported drug policy change by following the lead provided by countries like Portugal.
"The Scottish Government are short sighted by ignoring medical and scientific evidence and international best practice. In fact, they have made the situation worse by failing to invest enough in drug misuse projects.”
