Rennie: NHS hack means SNP must rule out central database

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie has today challenged SNP ministers to guarantee that they will not attempt to bring back a centralised ID database using NHS records in the wake of the current cyber attack.

Mr Rennie said:

“The continuing weakness of NHS and government systems to defend against cyber attacks means we have to be certain that the Scottish Government has abandoned its plan for a centralised ID database on all Scottish citizens..

“SNP ministers had expected to use NHS records as a basis for storing personal data about everyone in Scotland.

“Such a database could have made the current attack worse because it would have affected data on every government service and every citizen.

“It was a close shave as the SNP only cancelled their database plan after two years of campaigning by Liberal Democrats.

“SNP ministers need to guarantee that they have abandoned fully any future plans for a risky single database.”
