While visiting the Turriff Show in Aberdeenshire, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP today criticised the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Connectivity over the recent CAP shambles which has left farmers out of pocket. The comments come after last week where Scottish Government revealed that the European Commission has refused an extension to the deadline for making payments to farmers.
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
“Fergus Ewing was seen as the person who would come in and steady the ship after last year’s CAP shambles but he has snuffed out any remaining confidence with his bungling over this year's payments.
“The Cabinet Secretary has has back-tracked on many commitments and promises made over the CAP debacle. Audit Scotland have made it clear that this is not just a problem with a broken IT system or a single ministerial bungle.
“The SNP’s handling of rural communities has caused lasting damage to jobs, investment and growth in our rural economy.
“Last year the Minster promised that things would be different under his leadership. They are not, in fact they are worse.”
