RBS should be giving back to rural communities not shareholders

Commenting on reports that RBS is set to pay out it’s first dividend in a decade, Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross MP Jamie Stone said:

"Rather than give money back to shareholders, RBS should be giving something back to the communities who stood by them when times were tough. It seems to me that RBS has forgotten that the personal bond between bank and client, big or small, is the foundation of banking. The dividends we see being paid out sit ill with customers who have recently had drastically reduced access to banking services.

"RBS should end the closures of rural bank branches which pose a huge threat to local businesses and leave loyal customers without access to essential financial services.

"Scottish LIberal Democrats have proposed a number of solutions to the challenges facing RBS including community banking hubs where banks could pool resources together thereby ensuring services can remain open."
