Commenting in response to confirmation from Scottish Police Authority (SPA) Chair Susan Deacon that the new Chief Constable of Police Scotland will not take up their post until the end of the year, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
“No matter who is appointed, they will face a mammoth task in restoring public confidence following a crisis at the top. However, ultimately there must be an acceptance that problems are hardwired into Scotland’s policing structures.
“Given an appointment will not be in place until the end of the year, the Justice Secretary has plenty time to establish an independent expert commission to come forward with proposals to improve accountability, transparency and localism. He has no excuse left.”
