McArthur warns against hollowing out Fire Service

Responding to reports that fire stations are set to close amid severe financial warnings and depleted fire crews, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP today warned that pressure is building on the Scottish Government to address concerns that front line services are being put at risk.

Mr McArthur said:

“Under this SNP Government more than 1000 fire officers have been lost. 700 have gone since the SNP steamrollered through their centralisation plans.

“Now fire chiefs are warning that their budget black hole is equivalent to cutting 650 more posts in the coming years. Without urgent action from Ministers to address this situation, our vital fire and rescue services risk being hollowed out.

"While its right that the fire service consider the best use of their resources in the face of new pressures and challenges, it is also incumbent on ministers to recognise that a high quality service cannot be delivered by heaping further cuts on hardworking firefighters.

"When he next sits down at the cabinet table, the Justice Secretary must be prepared to press for our emergency services to be given the support they need."
