Responding to comments from Deputy Chief Constable Will Kerr in which he expressed surprise at how "normal" sectarianism and aggression towards police is from some football fans and told of recent incidents including a flare being thrown at a police horse, officers being pulled from horses and others being spat at and attacked, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
“This is a catalogue of appalling behaviour from a minority of fans. Decent, proper fans are disgusted at what these so-called supporters are up to. It turns people off going to games or taking their families.
“Violent and sectarian behaviour needs stamping out. It’s time to look seriously at escalating penalties, for example the possibility of shutting sections of grounds.
“The Government also needs to commit to working with communities, local authorities, churches, football clubs and others in taking forward preventative measures and boosting education. All the evidence shows that combination would be effective in tackling the scourge of sectarianism and hate crime.“
