Following the news that 500 uniformed police officers will be equipped with a taser from next month, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP commented:
"This rollout needs to be proportionate, the training must be robust and there needs to be rigorous scrutiny after each use of a taser.
"Police officers need the tools to keep themselves and the public safe. But the Justice Secretary must provide assurances that this is not a one-way shift and a slippery slope towards an enforcement model of policing.
"Michael Matheson also needs to address the question of whether the increasing number of police armed with guns and tasers would be scaled back in the event that the threat to officers and the public decreases, or if it would remain at the now heightened level.
"Officers and the public they serve are rightly proud of the ability of the police to do their jobs day in day out without carrying guns or tasers."
