McArthur: Police control room problems should have been addressed sooner

Responding to HMICS’s update report on police call handling, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP commented:

“While it is welcome that Police Scotland has markedly improved its call handling processes, HMICS has still had cause to issue a series of warnings and urged it to pick up the pace when it comes to implementing some recommendations.

“There remain a number of staffing challenges and fragmented systems still need upgrading. It is also concerning to see HMICS report a lack of available officers to respond to ‘lower priority’ calls in some areas.

“We were told time and again that centralisation would improve services but instead the SNP’s cuts are clearly taking their toll.

“There is no escaping the fact that many of the constructive changes we have seen should have been in motion before the rushed, botched centralisation of police control rooms. It is shameful that, despite all the warnings, SNP ministers and police bosses allowed serious problems in these facilities to continue for months, causing real harm.”
