McArthur: Ministers must shift culture away from short term sentences

Responding to the launch of a consultation on increasing the use of electronic monitoring for offenders, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP commented:

“If is certainly worth examining how the use of tags can best decrease the bloated prison population and avoid people being kept in custody unnecessarily.

“However, this is only part of the solution. Ministers have dithered for more than a year following their consultation to reduce damaging short-term sentences. It is time they got their act together and brought forward a comprehensive package of reforms that shift the culture away from locking people up and towards community justice.”
