Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP today urged the Scottish Government to take a leading role in tackling sectarianism in Scotland.
His comments follow the publication of a new progress report from the Advisory Group on Tackling Sectarianism, which indicated that much more work needs to be done to tackle the issue. Mr McArthur also urged the Scottish Government to cooperate with groups across Scotland’s communities.
Mr McArthur said:
“Tackling sectarianism is everyone’s responsibility but it is essential that the Scottish Government, local authorities and the police play a leading role in educating people on the corrosive impact that it has on communities.
“Top-down kneejerk responses like the reckless Offensive Behaviour at Football Act are a perfect example of how not to go about this.
“Efforts to tackle sectarianism hinge on their involving a much wider group of people, such as educational bodies and community organisations, right down to the grassroots. It is time to step up to the task of uniting communities and addressing prejudice, instead of being absent in the face of these divisions.”
