Speaking in the debate on whole life sentences, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP branded the Conservative approach to sentencing “populist and punitive” and said:
“There are plenty of reasons to debate our justice system in this Parliament. We have a police force that is chronically underfunded; working in buildings and with equipment that too often are not fit for purpose; and using analogue technology in a digital age.
“And we have our prisons which are overcrowded, underfunded and rapidly reaching crisis point – if they are not already there.
“Yet, with unbelievably poor timing, the Tories bring forward plans for how we can lock up more people for longer.
“Expanding our prison estate to accommodate the additional numbers required under Liam Kerr’s delusional tough justice strategy would come with the heftiest of price tags. This will not make Scotland safer.”
