Lib Dems warn SNP set to miss childcare target

Speaking after questioning the First Minister about how the Scottish Government will hire the 11,000 new staff it needs to fulfil its 2020 early learning and childcare targets, Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Tavish Scott MSP said:

"It remains far from clear whether the Scottish Government will attract the thousands of new workers needed to deliver its childcare promises.

"It was Scottish Liberal Democrats who persuaded SNP ministers that investing in the early years is proven to be the best way to improve a child's life chances. However, we know they are already behind, with capacity actually decreasing in some areas, fewer GTCS-registered teachers and take-up by 2-year-olds well below expectations.

"More and more organisations doubt if the Scottish Government can meet its target. SNP ministers need to offer assurances as to where exactly it expects these staff to come from."
