Scottish Liberal Democrat energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP has today called for the Scottish Government to “lead by example” on tackling transport emissions, after he successfully passed amendments to the Climate Change Bill which will require ministers to explicitly set how they will support public procurement of ultra low emission vehicles.
Mr McArthur commented:
"Action on climate change can’t come quick enough and it is widely recognised that the targets contained within this Bill mean little without equally ambitious policies to back them up.
“The best way to do that is to lead by example. Public bodies should be accelerating the shift to lower emission vehicles. The evidence shows this can deliver benefits in terms of costs, competitiveness and air quality,
“Scottish Liberal Democrats revealed recently that fewer than 1 in 20 local authority vehicles is eco-friendly. We need a Government that shows real leadership and commitment to tackling climate change and cleaning up the air we breathe.
“My amendments will force the Scottish Government to be open and transparent about supporting public procurement of ultra-low-emission vehicles, and hopefully press them to go further, faster.”
