Lib Dems applaud the efforts of NHS staff on 70th anniversary

Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has used the 70th anniversary of the NHS to highlight the dedicated work of NHS staff across the country.

Alex Cole-Hamilton said:

“The NHS was a cross-party creation and we all have a duty to protect it.

“We should use this milestone anniversary to celebrate and commend the work of doctors and nurses who work all hours of the day and days of the year to comfort and treat our most vulnerable people. To the care workers, mental health service staff, physios, dentists and GPs who keep our precious health service alive.

“Our hard working NHS staff are up against it all the time trying to deliver first rate care against a backdrop of diminished pay, workforce planning failings and under-resourcing.

“The model of treatment and care in this country is sound, it’s the direction of travel and the resources behind it that are completely off track.

“The SNP Government has presided over a stream of errors and misjudgements in the discharge of its responsibilities to our health service. A&E targets haven’t been met for nearly a year, people are left waiting in hospital as much as 600 nights when they’re fit to go home, mental health services are deficient and GP practices are under unimaginable strain.

“Today, as we reflect on the creation of our much-loved NHS, we must applaud the hard-working staff who keep it going. Now is the time for the SNP government to dedicate the right resources to the health service to ensure we’re still celebrating it in another 70 years time.”
