The Scottish Liberal Democrat spring conference in Hamilton has today voted in favour of an emergency motion calling for Shamima Begum to be returned to the UK to be investigated and deradicalised.
The motion demands the Home Secretary to comply with international law and treat Shamima’s case in line with the procedures set out in the Home Office’s
2018 counter terrorism strategy, which include supervised deradicalisation.
Liberal Democrat Scottish affairs spokesperson Jamie Stone MP said:
“Shamima Begum is Britain’s responsibility.
"The Home Secretary is grandstanding on a serious human rights point, when he should be setting an example and complying with international law.
“The Home Office has a procedure to deal with radicalised citizens, to bring them home, make them face justice for any crimes and associations but also be deradicalised in a careful, monitored fashion. There is no point in this process existing if the UK government is just going to ignore it.”
