Jardine presses Government on British baby trapped in war zone

Christine Jardine MP has secured a guarantee from Andrea Leadsom MP that she will personally facilitate a meeting with Home Office ministers to try and get a baby trapped in Erbil home to Scotland.

Ms Jardine who is the Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West raised the issue during questions to the Leader of the House of Commons.

Ms Jardine made the case on behalf of a constituent whose 13 month old daughter is currently stranded in Erbil, Iraq just 20 miles from active fighting. The Home Office has so far refused to grant the baby a passport even though the father is a naturalized British citizen and has been since 2009.

Ms Jardine said:

“I am incredibly concerned about the welfare of my constituent’s child. This is a desperate situation especially as the surrounding area around Erbil is becoming increasingly dangerous as the fighting gets closer to this little girl.

“This is so worrying and stressful for my constituent and his family and this must be resolved urgently.

“There has already been unnecessary lengthy delay to this case as my constituent has been trying to work with the Home Office for months to get his little girl home.

“I appreciate Ms Leadsom’s offer of help to secure a meeting with Ministers. I hope that this will help reunite this family as soon as possible."
