Figures showing an increase in food bank use should be a ‘wakeup call’ to the Prime Minister, according to Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine.
The Trussell Trust has revealed that foodbank use in Scotland has increased by 15% in the five months to September during the roll-out of Universal Credit, which is yet to be fully implemented in Edinburgh West.
The Liberal Democrat MP commented;
“Nobody should be forced to use food banks in Britain. If these latest figures are not a wakeup call to Theresa May about how unworkable Universal Credit is, then I don’t know what is.
“The Government has a duty to look after the most vulnerable in society, not drive them to food banks. If the Chancellor really is serious about ending austerity, then he should take note and fix this mess. Actions speak louder than words.
“Instead of standing by their flagship policy, the Tories must pause the roll out immediately and take action to fix it. My Liberal Democrat colleagues and I will continue to do all that we can to press them to do this in Parliament.”
