Independent Commission must resolve “mistakes” made in Police Scotland set up

Commenting on the news that Police Scotland’s new Chief Constable, Iain Livingstone, has acknowledged the mistakes made in setting up the national force, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

“Many of Police Scotland's problems can be traced directly back to the SNP's botched merger. The scars of that continue to inhibit its work. To make matters worse, the SNP Government is determined to make the same mistakes by merging the British Transport Police into Police Scotland without good reason or a business case

“I welcome the Chief Constable's commitment to devolved policing and local communities but that won't address the structural problems that have afflicted each and every police boss. An independent expert commission is needed to repair that damage and inject localism, democracy and transparency back into the whole system."
